Skillfast-UK –
Launch of ‘No Skills, No Fashion’ campaign

We are always trying to grab headlines in new and innovative ways, so we were excited by the opportunity to stage a protest with Skillfast-UK on the eve of the prestigious London Fashion Week.

Skillfast-UK wanted to publicly challenge the Government on policy issues around skills training in the fashion sector. We set about petitioning the Government to re-assess the way in which HE fashion courses deliver (or not as the case may be) technical training. The idea was to create 'hype' and a platform to launch an on-going campaign titled - 'no skills, no fashion' and to capture the imagination of employers within the industry as well as universities.

Skillfast

Together with Skillfast-UK we staged a stunt protest outside the House of Commons on the eve of London Fashion Week with six of the most striking up and coming models wearing toiles (a designers first mock up of a garment) holding placards with phrases such as 'fashion takes more than passion' and 'No skills, No fashion'.

The protest was given extra kudos when David Lammy MP and Minister for the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills confirmed his attendance along with the shadow secretary for Innovation, Universities and Skills, David Willets MP. Employers Imtaz Khaliq and Prof. Andrew Ramroop, a Savile Row tailor and lecturer at University of the Arts London, also supported the campaign.

The 'No skills, No fashion', launch was extremely successful. The photocall attracted photographers and broadcasters from the Press Association, Telegraph, Times, Daily Express, the Evening Standard.

Needless to say the results for the launch of this campaign were great. We achieved coverage in the Independent, The Guardian, Scottish Daily Record, Times Higher Education and Glamour.com to name a few.

“As a Sector Skills Council we tend to work in a very traditional way, typically in collaboration with the government, the education sector and our employers but we wanted to add new impetus to our efforts at a crucial time. 'No skills, no fashion' offered Skillfast-UK an edgy and unusual campaign. It was slightly out of our comfort zone but we were prepared to take the risk and we're thrilled with the results.”
