This link caught my eye earlier today. It details a new YouTube initiative called ‘Life in a Day’, which is a user generated campaign that will accept HD video submissions filmed on 24 July across the world in a bid to create a film which shows what the day looked like around the world. YouTube has a number of A list celebs and film directors already involved and initially I thought – wow, what a good idea but then quickly became quite skeptical about the true representation following Martha Lane-Fox’s recent PR campaign. She today launched her bid to get every working-age person using the web by 2012. As it stands approximately 10 million of us brits have never used the internet and nearly half of these people live in the most disadvantaged and deprived areas in the UK. If the figure is this high for non users here in the UK, I wonder what the stats are in other disadvantaged countries and populations? So, linking back to the Life in a Day campaign…will it really represent a day in the life of our world or just the exclusive, well off side? From a PR point of view maybe that’s what YouTube wants…just the glitzy, funny, lovely side of the world.
Very good points Becca! I imagine the videos sent through will be lovely and it is a good idea for a competition….but will it reflect the true life in a day for most people? no.
