After 18 years of being in the education system I expected the transition from university to the world of work to be a difficult one. Surprisingly, I found myself actually looking forward to leaving my student days behind me, no longer did cider, student nights and chat shows appeal to me. As everyone on my course got emotional at our ‘Journalism Graduation Ball’, sadness was not an emotion I partook in. Instead I was more anxious and excited about being a ‘grown up’.
Lucky for me I was one of the handful of people I knew who already had a job lined up for when I finished uni. As the number of unemployed degree-holders rises and graduates enter a tough job market with record debts, I felt relieved and grateful to be entering the big bad world of work… Something I never thought I would be.
I’ve been at MCG for almost a month now and there hasn’t been a dull day yet, every day provides me with a variety of things to do. The thing I like about PR is the fact that it is similar to journalism, but different at the same time. I still get to be creative and constantly keep up-to-date with the going ons of the world, but without the dog-eat-dog feeling that can come with working in the journalism field nowadays.
As much as I’m enjoying the world of work, I have to admit I do miss mid-week days off, student discount, and generally being a bit of a bum. Most of all, I now know what it feels like to get that ‘Friday feeling’!
